Critical Reflection

Module Learning The UCS1001 module, which lasted 13 weeks, was really enlightening and eye-opening in that it allowed me to learn new knowledge that improved my writing and presenting skills and prepared me with many useful and important skills for the future. I set myself the dual goals of improving both my technical writing and public speaking skills at the start of this program, and I am glad to say that I was able to do so with the support of everyone around me, especially my professor. Being frequently chosen by my peers to express my ideas during sharing sessions gave me a lot of opportunities to present and speak in front of the class, which was a huge blessing for me. The numerous rounds of delivery increased my confidence and courage to speak in unforeseen situations. I was exposed to new concepts like the Paul-Elder framework, which taught me how to explore materials from a range of perspectives and enhanced my research skills, which helped to improve my articulation and prof...

Technical Report: Evaluation

Despite the benefits of the proposed solution, there are still some potential challenges that may need to be considered with the added modifications made to the roofs of shophouses, especially for solar panels and water pipes. Overlooking them could lead to serious consequences and implications, which may result in permanent damage. Due to the fragility of the tiles on the shophouses, solar panel installers might have a difficult time conducting the installation (SolarReviews, 2023). Installers would have to handle the tiles carefully, which would extend the installation process and increase labour costs. Stakeholders may be dissuaded by the overall cost of the necessary supplies and equipment. 4.1 Complications of Racking Solar panel installation is permanent and could cause structural damage because racking is needed on roofs. To install the mounts, some roof tiles must be removed, which could result in the roof seal opening and potential water damage. Sustained exposure to water dam...

Technical Report: Individual Presentation Oral Pitch

With the idea that there was no cooling system in Clarke quay, our goal, as solar impact , to make an impact,  was to propose to the management team of CapitaLand to  implement a solar panel rainwater cooling system, which allows for light to be reflected and absorbed into the solar panels. The rainwater harvesting system will be used to cool the panels down in the event of overheating. The purpose of this cooling system on the rooftops of Clarke Quay shophouses, is to help in reducing the effects of UHI through achieving our goal of being more energy efficient and sustainable. With the mitigation of the effects of UHI in Clark quay  & through using this improved and efficient integration system proposed, we strongly believe that  it will allow Clark quay of being able to be awarded the green mark gold plus accreditation. ( A green mark score of between 90 - 100, “which indicates how sustainable and energy efficient a building is operating in the environment) Wit...

Tunnels in the past were utilized for purposes such as irrigation, drainage, and water transportation system as well as communication routes to improve the underground habitats to improve the standards of living. The Leonard (2022) webpage titled, “Innovation at the end of the tunnel”, informs readers about the rising need for underground infrastructures brought on by population pressure and urbanization. This underground infrastructure includes functions such as sanitation, logistics, and transportation. To meet these demands, modern tunnel-boring machines were introduced to meet these needs. As mentioned in another webpage by Trenchlesspedia, (2020, para. 2), tunnel-boring machines are referred to as “mole(s)” and are designed to bore circular tunnels through all types of earth, from sandy soil to hard rocks. The recently completed construction of the Thomson - East Coast Line (TEL) in Singapore is an excellent example of how this technology is being extensively utilized (Wong, 2019)...
